Last month RadicalxChange partnered with the Web3 Institute in Ukraine to host The Future of Digital Democracy: Learning with Ukraine, bringing together participants from around the world to explore how communities are strengthening democracy under pressure.
Ukraine’s democratic transformation has been remarkable. In just two years, the country jumped from 57th to 1st in the UN E-Participation Index. Katia Lukicheva shared how Ukraine democratized health funding through hyperlocal participation, Oleksandra Radchenko showed how participatory budgeting now engages citizens in hundreds of communities, often exceeding election turnout, and Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi spoke about the centrality of digital services and tools like Diia and a continued focus on the infrastructure of decentralization and digital democracy to Ukraine’s long-term strategic planning.
Beyond Ukraine, Audrey Tang demonstrated how AI can deepen democracy, Takahiro Anno shared Team Mirai’s broad listening work in Japan, and Zarah Bruhn outlined plans at SPRIN-D (Germany’s Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation) to launch civic hackathons experimenting with some of the tools in our space – more on this soon!
Drawing on these insights, we’re developing the Resilient Democracy Toolkit, a practical guide translating lessons from digital identity, deliberation, and decentralized governance into actionable guidance for organizers worldwide. Results from the Agora Consultation
Over the last two months, 23 community members contributed 483 votes and insights on Agora about our values and principles. The results revealed a strong foundation: we value openness and experimentation, and agree that progress requires direction, not just speed.
A productive tension emerged around how pluralism applies in today’s political climate. Two equal-sized groups formed distinct positions: “Pluralists” who argue we should take stronger stances to defend democratic norms, and “Pragmatists” who believe maintaining neutrality preserves space for diverse experimentation.
This tension reflects a crucial distinction: defending the foundations that make pluralism possible is non-negotiable, but within those foundations we must remain radically open to engaging with all democratic perspectives, including those that challenge prevailing orthodoxies. The question isn’t whether to take stances, but which stances preserve the conditions for genuine democratic plurality.
